Anti Social Phone Conversations

Here in the west nearly everyone now has a mobile phone. We should all be aware that around half of the worlds population will have never made or received a telephone call.

This fact highlights the technological gap that exists between the developing countries and those lucky enough to have affordable access to modern communication technology.

But there are plenty of people who believe that mobile phones are actually more of a scourge and not very useful. Have you recently used any form of public transport?

I have to take the train to and from London every day and I find myself forced to listen to mobile conversations that I would far rather not hear. On my homeward journey I regularly listen to people calling their partners just to tell them: ‘I’m on the train’. And every evening I have to listen to the same people making the same calls with the same useless message. What did they do before they had a mobile phone?

I’m also forced to listen to teenagers engaged in long drawn out conversations that don’t appear to make any sense. Often, they seem to be discussing their boring, empty lives or scathingly criticizing an alleged friend’s dress sense or discussing boyfriends in unflattering terms. In one recent conversation a young lady loudly shared the details of a recent sexual experience with a detailed account of what took place. Everyone in the carriage was squirming in their seats with embarrassment as she proceeded to describe her experience, blow by blow.

Being forced to listen to what should be private conversations is just one aspect of modern mobile phone use that is highly anti-social. Another is people who use their mobiles to play their music far too loudly without any thought for others who might not like hip hop music.

We all need to be reminded of how lucky we are to even own mobile phones. People who use their mobile phones to describe their sex lives should be banned from owning them.
